The deadline for Illinoisans who own certain semi-automatic firearms to register them with the state remains in effect after rules were the subject of a legislative panel and a federal court hearing.
In Chicago, the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules took no action on revised rules, opting to continue reviewing the proposed changes at January’s meeting in Springfield. The original emergency rules filed on Sept. 15 remain in effect. When questioned by state Rep. Ryan Spain at Tuesday’s meeting, ISP attorney Suzanne Bond said the reason they didn’t produce rules for months was because of pending court action.
Separately in East St. Louis Tuesday, federal Judge Stephen McGlynn said he is “inclined” to not issue an injunction against the Jan. 1 registry deadline out of concern it would make things messier. He expects to issue a ruling promptly and urged for swifter action on addressing the merits of the challenges.
