Gov. J.B. Pritzker has already approved a law to allow certain non-citizens to become police officers in Illinois. Now, some U.S. Senators from Illinois want the same for the U.S. military. However, some are opposed to the idea.
The measure for migrant police passed with bipartisan support during the spring session and had the backing of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Now, Illinois Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin wants the same for the U.S. military.
State Rep. Adam Niemerg says non-citizens should not be relied upon to protect citizens.
Durbin said the proposal would count military service towards the non-citizen being granted citizenship.
