The Vandals scored early and scored often on Friday night to secure a playoff berth for the 7th straight non-COVID season.
Gillespie was 3 and out on their opening drive of the game. And, then fumbled the snap on the punt attempt, which gave the Vandals a short field on their first possession at the Miner 15 yard line. The Vandals punched it in for a TD at the 8:23 mark of the 1st quarter and scored a second TD just 100 seconds later to get the lead quickly to 12-0. Gillespie would get on the board to make it 12-7 before the Vandals would roll off 40 straight points. The Vandals built the lead to 38 to 7 at halftime. And, got the game to running clock (40 point lead) with 39 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Andrew Kelly tied a school record with 6 rushing Touchdowns on the night. He ties the mark set by Robin Bone in week 9 of the 1976 season.
For the Vandals, they are now 6-2 on the season and have secured a playoff berth for the 7th straight season in which there have been playoffs. In the shortened pandemic season in the spring of 2021, the Vandals went 4-2 but there no playoffs were held. The Vandals will wrap up the regular season next Friday night at Mark Greer Field for Senior Night and will take on the Litchfield Purple Panthers. Litchfield is now playoff eligible after their win over Pana on Friday night.
