Illinois is the latest state to enact pay transparency legislation, but an employment expert says overachievers might suffer the impact. The law requires employers with 15 or more workers to provide information on pay scale and benefits in job postings. Rob Wilson, president of Employco USA, says the law will have an effect on raises and bonuses.
Wilson adds that pay transparency can also lead to tension between coworkers. Chris Davis, Illinois director of the National Federation of Independent Business, says the law will be detrimental to smaller mom-and-pop shops.
Illinois is the ninth state to pass a pay transparency law, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2025.
