Classes began Monday at a number of colleges and universities in Illinois. Governor J.B. Pritzker paid a visit to the University of Illinois to kick off the school year.
Tuition hikes were approved for this fall at the U of I, Illinois State University, Eastern Illinois University, and Western Illinois University. The system’s nearly $698 million dollar operating budget in the 2024 fiscal year that begins July 1 includes a 7 percent increase for general operations. Pritzker said more state funding should be made available.
A 2022 study found that the U of I System contributes $19 billion dollars annually to the Illinois economy.
