Gov. J.B. Pritzker says he’s proud to sign a law allowing noncitizens in Illinois to become police. The measure passed with bipartisan support during spring session. Police groups were split between being neutral or supporting the measure. State Sen. Chapin Rose opposed the bill and said noncitizens shouldn’t be allowed to detain citizens.
Alongside more than 130 bills Pritzker’s office announced were signed Friday, House Bill 3751 allowing noncitizens the ability to apply to be a police officer was among them. Monday, the governor said he was proud to sign the bill.
The measure only allows those legally authorized to work in the U.S. and able to lawfully obtain, carry or purchase firearms to be police.
