Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have sent Governor J.B. Pritzker several measures dealing with opioids. The governor has already signed a bill into law requiring concerts to have opioid-overdose antidotes on hand. A bill awaiting his signature deals with educating high schoolers about how deadly fentanyl can be.
That is the bill’s sponsor, state Senator Laura Ellman. Another measure would amend the Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction Act. State Representative Tony McCombie says this would allow pharmacists and retail stores to sell fentanyl test strips over the counter.
The bill would also allow county health departments to offer the strips for free.
