The Vandalia American Legion is looking to build a Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown Vandalia.
During Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Mayor Rick Gottman informed the Vandalia City Council the American Legion had sold their property but they were still meeting as an organization and actually using City Hall for their meetings. And, Mayor Gottman says the Legion has turned some money over to the City of Vandalia to work on building a Veteran’s Memorial Park in the lot in front of the Eagle Mural in downtown Vandalia.
Mayor Gottman says the current plans would be for 5 stones to be park of the memorial with the names of Veterans on one of them. Mayor Gottman pointed out the current Veteran’s Memorial of the American Legion, in front of the former American Legion building, has some issues with the name plates coming off of the bricks. Mayor Gottman says he is hopeful to have a plan to present at the next City Council meeting.
