Some Illinois lawmakers are skeptical about the millions of dollars the governor wants to spend on early childhood education. In his latest budget proposal, Governor J.B. Pritzker wants to spend $250 million dollars in early childhood programs, and another $100 million on facilities. He says studies show it is a worthwhile investment.
State Representative Blaine Wilhour says Illinois spends over $16-thousand dollars per student, far more than our neighboring states.
Wilhour says Illinois schools have to stop promoting ideology and focus on the basics like reading and math. He notes that only 30 percent of Illinois students can read at grade level, and 26 percent can do math at grade level.
