The Fayette County Board spent a good portion of their monthly meeting on Tuesday night hearing from a county resident concerning flooding issues on her family’s property due to drainage. Diana Smith of the Pittsburg area was on hand for the meeting with a PowerPoint presentation to depict the issues her family has had on their property due to drainage flow from the intersection by the old Pittsburg store and through a channel on their collective property. Smith said her brother has had issues with water getting under his house causing damage to floor joists and expressed that the properties had experienced erosion. Smith said she had spoke with board member Merrell Collins and County Engineer Michael Maxey about the issue and felt that she had gotten nowhere. It was also brought up that the county is bound by a Illinois Drainage Law which States Attorney Brenda Mathis says does not allow them to divert the natural flow of water an impact study is done. EMA Director Rachel Denning also expressed during the meeting that she could look into possible damage assessment for the properties.
In other business, the board approved a resolution opposing the Illinois General Assembly’s House Bill 5855, Protect Illinois Communities Act by a vote of 12-0 with one board member not in attendance for the meeting. The board also approved testing the Washington School for asbestos. The motion was passed by a vote of 9-3 with board members Glenda Bartels, Pat Click and Scott Ray voting against the testing. Two appointments were also approved as Doug Knebel will serve on the IllinoisSouth Tourism Board and Pat Click will now serve on the Southern Illinois Economic Development Association Board of Directors.
