Illinois lawmakers approved pay raises for legislators, statewide officers and executive agency staff amid more than $1.7 billion of other taxpayer spending. A House amendment to Senate Bill 1720 passed the House late Friday. House Majority Leader Greg Harris laid out various elements, including $850 million for the state’s rainy day fund, $460 million for hospitals to address nursing costs, $400 million into the Large Business Attraction Fund and other spending.
If approved, legislator base pay would increase $12,000, from about $73,000 to $85,000. Republican state Rep. Mark Batinick spoke in opposition.
The Senate approved the measure late Sunday. It can now be sent to the governor’s desk.
