The City of Vandalia will purchase 3 license plate reader cameras.
At their meeting this past Monday, the Vandalia City Council approved the purchase of 3 cameras at a cost of $9,750 in year one and $7,500 in year two. Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray talks about the benefit of having the cameras.
One cameras would be located near Circle K Convenience Store as individuals come into town, one would be on Route 51 near the mile marker 63 off ramp of Interstate 70 and the third would be placed near the mile marker 61 off ramp. And, Chief Ray says he has had discussions with Wal-Mart about them possibly purchasing cameras for their entrances and exits due to retail thefts. Chief Ray says the cameras are very user friendly.
This will also be something that could be county-wide very soon. Chief Ray says the City of St. Elmo has approved the purchase of 2 cameras, Ramsey is working on potentially having 2 and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is looking at potentially purchasing 4 cameras. The purchase was approved by the Vandalia City Council.
