Brownstown-St. Elmo high jumper Addie McWhorter and Altamont sprinter Grace Nelson will look to bring home some hardware today as they compete at the IHSA Class 1A State Track Finals at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium.
McWhorter is a second time qualifier in the high jump event and narrowly missed the podium at last year’s State Finals as a sophomore with the final medalist spot being determined by misses. McWhorter is slated to jump in the #8 spot out of the 12 finalists with competition beginning at 10am.
Nelson will compete in three events during Saturday’s finals. Nelson was the champion of the 300m Hurdles in 2021 as a freshman and will look to reclaim that title in the 300 Finals at 3:15pm. Before defending her title, Nelson will compete in the 100m Hurdle Finals at 1:10pm. Nelson finished well ahead of the field in the Prelims with a time of :14.18 and will be chasing down the championship in the event as well as trying to beat the 1A girls record in the event of :13.97. To wrap up her day, Nelson will compete in the 200m Dash finals at 4:05pm, coming into the Finals with the third fastest preliminary time.
