(Decatur, IL) — A Korean War soldier’s remains are back in Decatur 71 years after he went missing. Asa Vance’s remains were flown into a St. Louis airport recently, where a procession brought him back to his hometown. Veterans, family, and community members lined the streets to honor Vance. Vance was declared missing-in-action in December 1950 in North Korea after his unit was attacked by enemy forces. He was listed as presumed dead in 1954. In 2018, the North Korean government turned over 55 boxes holding the remains of soldiers killed in the war. Analysts determined Vance was among them. His funeral and burial are set for today with full military honors.
