A bill requiring anyone operating a power motorboat or personal watercraft to carry liability insurance recently passed the State Senate Transportation Committee.
If passed into law, the new rule would impact a significant number of boat owners in Illinois. The bill mandates liability insurance for owners of particularly high-powered boats, along with any boat over 21 feet in length. Mike Mcelroy, President of Chicago Harbor Safety Commission, spoke in favor of the bill to the Senate Committee.
Concerns were raised by members of the committee adding another cost to boat owners of the state, thought the bill’s sponsor State Senator Julie A. Morrison said a large portion of owners are likely to already have insurance.
The bill ultimately passed with a vote of 16 to 1, sending it to the full Senate.
