Our poll on www.vandaliaradio.com shows the majority would like to go to year-round Daylight Saving Time and most would like to stop the twice-a-year time change.
50% of the poll said they would like to go to year round Daylight Saving Time. 38% said they would like to go with year round Standard time. Just 12% of those surveyed said they would like to continue with the twice-a-year time change.
All year Daylight Saving Time was tried as an experiment in the 1970’s and was stopped early because of issues. Some of those issues are sunrises not until 9 am in some regions in the winter, which led to children going to school in the dark and posed safety concerns. Another drawback with all year DST is experts say keeps clocks one hour out of sync with the natural sun-based body clock, which can lead to long term fatigue and health issues.
All year Standard Time also poses issues, such as sunrise before 4 am in some areas in the summer and could lead to negative economic impacts because of the earlier darkness throughout the year.
While there has been talk of making one time year-round, the matter has not really made great headway in the legislature. One other compromise beginning to gain some steam is a compromise of 1/2 hour between DST and Standard Time and making that time permanent—but that could lead to problems with time alignment with other areas of the world.
