Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has proposed his state budget for fiscal year 2027.
The governor delivered his State of the State and budget address at the Illinois Capitol on Wednesday.
Pritzker proposed a social media platform fee he said would generate $200 million per year to support K-12 education.
“Parents and kids deserve to have better funded schools. If social media giants are going to feed off of Illinois families, they ought to support Illinois families,” Pritzker said.
Pritzker said Illinois is among the top 20 economies in the world.
The governor proposed a $54.8 billion budget with a total spend of $56 billion when transfers to other state funds are included.
The state budget was $39 billion when Pritzker took office in 2019.
