As hunters get ready for the 2nd weekend of firearm deer hunting season, a look back to the first weekend shows hunters harvested better than 51,000 deer.
The total was 51,409. That number is down from 54,661 taken the first weekend last year and 53,348 taken in the first weekend in 2023.
In Fayette County, hunters took 1,275 deer in the first weekend of firearm deer hunting season. That is down slightly from 1,298 last year but up from 1,166 in 2023.
As for other area counties, Bond County hunters harvested 533 deer in the first weekend this year, compared to 594 last year and 562 in 2023. Effingham County hunters harvested 699 deer in the first weekend this year. That is down from 763 last year but up from 696 in 2023. Marion County hunters took 1,164 in the first weekend this year, down from 1,272 last year and 1,202 in 2023.
The second weekend of firearm deer hunting season runs for 4 days and begins tomorrow–December 4th through 7th.
