The Fayette County Coroner is handling the death of what is believed to be a former Louisiana man.
Fayette County Coroner Dave Harris reports that on Tuesday afternoon he was contacted to respond to the Kaskaskia River bridge east of Vandalia on U.S. Route 40. A death was reported under the bridge in a so-called “encampment.” Coroner Harris says upon his arrival, he observed a white male deceased in his tent. The individual was pronounced dead at 2:51 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
Coroner Harris says Vandalia Police Department reported they had a recent encounter with the individual and believe him to be a 66 year old man formerly of Louisiana. Harris says he is awaiting further information from Louisiana authorities to try and make a positive ID. The Coroner’s Office is asking for anyone that may have had any contact with the individual to contact his office at 618-283-5027.
The man’s body has been transported to Springfield for an autopsy. Coroner Harris says he was assisted at the scene by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Vandalia Police Department.
