Modifications to the Clean Slate Act can now be sent to Governor J.B. Pritzker after Illinois legislators got the measure across the finish line on the final day of the Fall Veto Session.
In the Senate on Wednesday evening, Democratic State Senator Elgie Sims said House Bill 1836 takes crimes that currently can be sealed by petition to allow them to be sealed automatically.
Republican State Senator Steve McClure opposed the bill. He said he worries this doesn’t encourage convicted criminals to focus on rehabilitation.
After passing the Senate, the House approved the measure Thursday and the bill can now sent to the Governor’s office for his approval.
