(Springfield, IL) — The former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy charged with murdering Sonya Massey is defending his actions. Sean Grayson is on trial for murder in the shooting death of the unarmed Black woman inside her home in July 2024. He testified yesterday that he fired his gun in self-defense and that his actions “matched the threat level” because he believed Massey was about to throw a pot of boiling water at him. Grayson added that he couldn’t use a taser due to Massey’s clothing. The trial is expected to continue today with closing arguments.
