(Springfield, IL) — The trial of Sean Grayson continues today. The former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy is charged with murder in the shooting death of Sonya Massey inside her home in July 2024. During opening statements yesterday, the defense said the shooting was a tragedy but not a crime, adding that Grayson was acting in self-defense because he thought Massey was going to throw a boiling pot of water at him. During testimony, Grayson’s former partner, Deputy Dawson Farley, testified that he was “caught off guard” by the shooting, adding that Grayson’s actions didn’t follow training.
