There doesn’t appear to be any explanation for a large boom heard by many in Vandalia over the weekend.
Most pointed to the noise being on Saturday evening about 8 pm, while others say they heard it on more than one night. One thought was an earthquake, but it appears the only significant earthquake in the area was back in May in Coles County. Both Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray and Vandalia Fire Chief Zac Stombaugh know of no issues that would have led to a large boom. And, there are no reports of an issues afterward.
When you search “large unknown booms” it seems to be a common occurrence. Information on google states “Reports of large, unexplained booms are common and have many potential causes, including human-made sources like sonic booms and explosions, and natural phenomena like meteors and “skyquakes” However, many reported booms turn out to be ordinary events, though some remain unexplained.”
