The willingness to discuss changes to Illinois’ cashless bail law with the national spotlight on the state of Illinois depends on who you ask.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end federal funds for jurisdictions with no-cash bail laws. Illinois was the first state to implement the law statewide in September 2023. Republicans have called to expand the types of criminal charges defendants can be held on pretrial. Democratic State Senator Robert Peters said he’s of the debate and Republicans aren’t genuine.
Republican State Representative Patrick Sheehan, who is also a law enforcement officer, said Peters needs to talk to victims.
Approved in January 2021, the Illinois Supreme Court allowed no-cash bail to take effect in September 2023.
