The re-paving of a section of Randolph Street in Vandalia should be completed soon. And, along with that, the Vandalia City Council approved to accept an issue with an area of that pavement.
During Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Engineer Lee Beckman of Milano & Grunloh Engineer gave the council an update on the project. He says they first found there was unsuitable soil under the pavement. And, the City’s Public Works Department has been hauling away dirt and then hauling in rock to go under the new pavement to give it a much better base. But, there is an issue with one area of the pavement. Beckman says a 13 feet by 80 feet section of the pavement grades out to 3000 PSI (pounds per square inch)—and that is below the required 3500 PSI. But, Beckman says the contractor is offering a compromise.
Beckman said that 3000 PSI is still good concrete and says there’s a very good chance is could be good for 20 years or more. City Public Works Director James Jackson also weighed in with some questioning from Mayor Doug Knebel.
The City Council agreed to accept the compromise from the contractor and keep the 13 feet by 80 feet section in place as is. Beckman said this compromise will still need to be blessed by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Beckman added the Randolph Street project should be completed either this week or next week.
