How to address siltation issues at Vandalia Lake a big topic of discussion at Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting.
During his monthly report, Lee Beckman of Milano & Grunloh Engineering again mentioned the application for a grant to help pay for work on the siltation issue at Vandalia Lake was not successful. Alderman Russ Stunkel–who is the head of the Lake Committee–brought up what needs to be done next in regards to figuring out the siltation problem. Beckman gave an example of one possible system to fix it.
But, Beckman pointed out the siltation is something that needs to be done before dredging work or the problem just comes right back. He also pointed out you are looking at something that will have a very hefty price tag, too. Mayor Doug Knebel pointed out to Stunkel that some dredging is being done by one individual in their cove.
With the Lake being the City’s water source, it was asked if there might be other grant opportunities. Beckman said those would probably be through the EPA and such sources the City is currently utilizing for the Water Treatment Plant project. Beckman said he believed the best first step was to come up with a financial plan and getting some estimates. The matter will likely be discussed further at the Lake Committee in the near future.
