(Springfield, IL) — The Sonya Massey Bill is changing police hiring in Illinois. Governor Pritzker signed the measure into law yesterday.
The law creates stricter hiring practices for law enforcement by requiring departments to thoroughly investigate a candidate’s history, including disciplinary records and misconduct, before hiring them. The measure was introduced after former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson shot and killed Massey inside her home in July 2024. Investigations revealed that Grayson had a history of disciplinary issues at his previous police jobs and had pleaded guilty in two misdemeanor DUI cases. He is charged with first-degree murder and is set to go on trial October 20th in Peoria County.
