
John R. Ericksen
September 4, 1937 – July 29, 2025
John R. Ericksen, 87, of Vandalia, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on July 29, 2025. A dedicated educator, proud Marine, and beloved father and grandfather. John leaves behind a legacy of strength, service, and deep love for his family.
John was born in Chicago on September 4, 1937, the son of Anders and Velma (Smithson) Ericksen. He married the love of his life, Sandra (Johnson) Ericksen, on August 29, 1964. John served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1956-1958. Following his service, he pursued a lifelong career in education, working as an elementary and middle school teacher and principal at the Forest Park School District for 35 years. His impact on generations of students and educators in his community was profound and lasting.
John enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling with his wife, Sandy, and fishing in Canada with his buddies. He was also a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, finding joy in every game and creating lasting memories cheering them on with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Ericksen; his brother, James Ericksen; and his sister, Jean Glowacki.
He is survived by his son, Chad (Tammy) Ericksen; his daughter, Traci (Stacy) Stewart; his grandchildren, Shelbi (Rilley) Smock, Cody Stewart, Taylor Ericksen, and Tiffanie Ericksen; and his sisters, Jackie Michaels and Joanie Hilton.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at the Vandalia Country Club on Saturday, August 16th, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm., with a service to follow. Miller Funeral Home, Vandalia, IL, is in charge of arrangements. Online memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.millerfh.net.
