Illinois Republicans say a new law empowering police in Illinois to swiftly remove squatters from private property reverses years of Democrat-backed policies that emboldened them.
The shift comes after State Representative Marcus Evans demanded action when squatters took over the home next door.
State Senator Chris Balkema acknowledged that COVID-era eviction moratoriums hindered the enforcement of evictions and may have emboldened squatters. Still, he welcomed Governor J.B. Pritzker’s signing of Senate Bill 1563, which authorizes police remove squatters once ownership has been confirmed.
The law takes effect January 1st of 2026.
