Track and Field Newcomers of the Year
Jackson Wimberly, Vandalia – The freshman pole vaulter picked up where he left off from junior high, reaching new heights in the event. Wimberly competed in 15 meets turning in three top 10 finishes during the indoor season. During outdoor season, Wimberly captured four first place finishes, four second place finishes, two third place finishes and a pair of top 10 finishes including an 8th place finish at the IHSA 1A State Track Finals. Wimberly broke his own personal record in the event three times in his freshman season with a best of 12’ 6” and including his three years in junior high, has medaled at a State Track Meet for the last four years in a row.
Ada Roberts, Altamont – The freshman sprinter and jumper kicked off her first high school season with a big third place performance in the long jump at the multi-class Gene Armer Indoor Invitational coming in at just a couple inches under 17 feet and qualified for the Illinois Top Times Indoor Championships where she battled through an injury in warmups to take 13th place with 16 foot jump. Moving into outdoor season, Roberts battled back from her indoor season injury and was a key member of the school record breaking 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams that would both qualify for the IHSA 1A State Track Finals and she would also finish second in four of eight meets in the long jump and qualify individually for the IHSA 1A State Finals in the long jump where she finished 30th as a freshman.
