An advocate for the Illinois business community says lawsuit-challenged legislation approved by the General Assembly could cost the state dearly.
Republican lawmakers cited Senate Bill 328 when they alleged that the Democratic supermajority short-circuits the legislature’s three-readings rule by gutting bill language and replacing it just before passage.
Illinois Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Lou Sandoval said SB 328 broadens lawyers’ ability to use Illinois for general jurisdiction lawsuits.
Sandoval said Pennsylvania is the only state with a similar law in place.
New York’s governor said she vetoed similar legislation in 2021 because it might have deterred companies from doing business there.
