A St. Elmo man is facing multiple charges in Fayette County Court after an incident that allegedly involved him threatening a Police Officer and then refusing to come out of his home.
St. Elmo Police Chief Jeremy Scruggs reports that at around 9 pm on Thursday, June 19th, a St. Elmo Police Officer was leaving his residence from his meal break. The report says a vehicle pulled up and a male jumped out and is alleged to have threatened to kill the officer and his family. The St. Elmo Police Officer then attempted to pull the subject over but the subject allegedly refused to stop until he arrived at his residence. The report states the subject pulled into his garage and shut the door. The Officer made contact through the door but the subject refused to come outside. Other officers were dispatched to the location and several hours of negotiations were conducted without success. The report says the subject would talk through the screen and then shut and lock the door. Chief Scruggs says the ILEAS SWAT Team arrived on location around 2 am. And, upon their arrival, the subject came outside and was taken into custody without incident.
The subject was identified as 44 year old Torrence T. Smith of St. Elmo. Smith has been charged in Fayette County Court with Threatening a Public Official–which is a Class 3 Felony, along with Aggravated Assault and Fleeing/Attempting to Elude an Officer–which are both Class A Misdemeanors.
Upon his appearance in Fayette County Court, court information states that Smith indicated he does not understand the charges but understands the possible penalties. The Public Defender was appointed to represent Smith for the pre-trial release hearing purposes. And, a pre-trial detention order was entered.
