(Springfield, IL) — Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is calling on state lawmakers to tax the “ultra-rich” to help fill a 771-million-dollar budget gap for Chicago-area transit agencies. The state General Assembly adjourned this past weekend without passing a mass transit funding bill. Lawmakers have been discussing ways to boost revenue for public transit, including new tolls on suburban drivers, a rideshare tax, and fees for charging electric vehicles. They could go back to Springfield later this year to pass transit legislation. Johnson said he’s confident that a deal can get done.
