A City of Vandalia Alderman would like to see the Vandalia City Council looking into potentially expanding their golf cart and UTV driving access in town.
During last week’s Vandalia City Council meeting, Alderman Bret Brosman says he would like to see them look to expand on the program that was started on January 1st of 2024.
Brosman also reiterated something he said at the time of the original discussion–that he believes all the crossing signs for golf carts and UTVs are not necessary and he would be in favor of just having signs at the entrances of town saying that this is a golf cart and UTV community. But, it was pointed out the Illinois Department of Transportation weighed in on many of the crossing sign areas. City Attorney Ryan Connor said he knows I-DOT is not in favor of more signs and Brosman stated he believes they should look to expand to more streets.
Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray said there have not been any issues and he is not aware of the City giving out any tickets for violations to the vehicles. He did mention there isn’t a lot of area left to expand, other than Randolph Street, as some other streets are off limits because they are state or federal highways. It was pointed out the number signing up for a golf cart or UTV permit is down. City Clerk Carla Huhn said last year there were 100 who got their sticker, while this year they have issued 55 for side by sides, or UTVs, and 5 or 6 for golf carts.
