(Springfield, IL) — A Purple Heart medal is back with the family of a late World War Two Army veteran from Lansing, Illinois. Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs returned the medal to the grandson of Army Corporal Henry Van Der Noord.
Van Der Noord earned the Purple Heart for wounds he suffered during the fight to liberate the Philippines in May 1945. His Purple Heart was among items in a safe deposit box submitted to the state treasurer’s office in 2020.
