A union-backed measure to pay student teachers would also provide extra compensation to eligible cooperating teachers.
House Bill 1375 is in the Illinois Senate Appropriations Education Committee.
State Rep. Steven Reick urged a “no” vote on the House floor last month, due to the measure’s emergency rule-making authority.
ShiAnne Shively of the Illinois Education Association supports the measure, which could cost state taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.
The Illinois Education Association is the state’s largest teachers union.
Shively said the funds would flow through the Illinois Board of Higher Education.
