In a state where its residents pay the second highest gas taxes in the country, another increase is on the horizon in Illinois. When the state’s new fuel tax kicks in on July 1st, motorists will go from paying 47 cents per gallon in taxes to 48.3 cents per gallon.
That is Ravi Mishra, Policy Analyst with the Illinois Policy Institute. It is estimated the average Illinois motorist pays over $320 in gas taxes each year. There has been legislation introduced that would temporarily halt fuel tax rate changes linked to the Consumer Price Index. Mishra says Illinoisans shouldn’t be punished because of the incompetence in Springfield.
When Governor J.B. Pritzker took office, the state’s gas tax was 19 cents per gallon.
