(Springfield, IL) — Lawyers for the former Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputy charged in the killing of Sonya Massey last year are asking the Illinois Supreme Court to release him from custody as he awaits trial. Sean Grayson’s defense argued for his release yesterday before the state’s high court. They claim Grayson would comply with all orders if he were released. Grayson is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of the 36-year-old Black woman last July inside her home in an unincorporated neighborhood of Springfield. His trial date is set for October 20th in Peoria County.
