Vandalia baseball held off Carlyle’s seventh inning surge to get a 9 to 8 win on the road on Monday. The Vandals started their scoring early taking advantage of a Carlyle error to score a pair of runs and go up 2-0. Carlyle responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning taking a 3-2 lead over the Vandals. That lead wouldn’t last long as Vandalia as with bases loaded, Jack Lewis hit a fly ball to center field that cleared the bases for three runs and Vandalia went up 5-3. Scoring then came to a halt for both teams as they played four and a half scoreless innings. The Vandals practiced patience at the plate and drew three straight walks to begin the seventh inning before Qwentyn Stombaugh singled to score two runs. A bases loaded walk brought in another run and a sacrifice fly brought in a fourth run for the inning as the Vandals surged ahead 9-3. Carlyle gave the Vandals a scare, putting up five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before a fielder’s choice out ended the Carlyle offensive threat and the game as the Vandals held on for the 9-8 win. Vandalia moves to 11-14 on the season and will play again today as they host North Clay.
