Illinois farmers are playing catch up this spring planting season. While soybean progress is slightly ahead of schedule, Brad Summa with the U.S. Department of Agriculture says corn planting is lagging behind a bit.
Around the state, about 1/3rd of the soybean crop is in the ground which is in line with the 5-year average. On the Illinois Farmers Facebook page, several farmers checked in while out in the rain.
In the latest USDA crop report, there were just over 2 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending May 4th. An extended dry period for Illinois is expected so planting averages will most likely escalate in the coming days.
