Vandalia baseball hung with Southwestern in the hits column, recording just one less than the Piasa Birds, but the Vandals suffered the 8 to 4 loss in South Central Conference action at home on Tuesday. Southwestern put up two runs in the first inning and tacked on two more in the third inning as Vandalia trailed 4-0. The Vandals got their scoring going in the bottom of the third inning, Jack Lewis scored from third base on a fielder’s choice by Chase Cearlock and Qwentyn Stombaugh hit a RBI single to shortstop as Vandalia cut the Birds lead to 4-2. After two scoreless innings, Southwestern got the scoring going again, with four runs in the top of the sixth inning as Vandalia found themselves trailing 8-2. A RBI groundout from Owen Halford brought in Drew Jones to score and an error that allowed Lewis to reach base also allowed Ayden Carroll to score as the Vandals cut the Southwestern lead to 8-4. That would hold as the final score as the seventh inning went by scoreless and the Vandals suffered the 8-4 conference loss. Vandalia is now 8-13 on the season and to 2-5 in the SCC. They will play again on Thursday as they host Litchfield for another SCC matchup.
