The Vandalia City Council approved an ordinance at their meeting on Monday forgiving a demolition lien at 419 S. Cypress Street.
City Administrator LaTisha Paslay says the current owner bought the property at a tax sale at the same time the city got permission to tear it down. The new property owner asked to potentially waive the demolition lien and she also informed the City Council the new property owner paid back taxes on the property along with purchasing the property at the tax sale.
As the City Council voted, Alderman Bret Brosman said he was a no vote as he felt this set a “dangerous precedent.”
Before voting, Alderman Bob Bowen asked for clarification from City Attorney Ryan Connor.
The ordinance even states that the city has determine that would cost more to pursue the demolition lien, which has a cost of $7,850, than it is likely to recover with regard to the property. The ordinance was approved by the Vandalia City Council.
