A new study shows what most Illinoisans are already aware of—the taxes in the state are the worst in the country. The personal finance website WalletHub compared state and local tax rates in the 50 states and the District of Columbia against national medians. Researcher Chip Lupo says Illinois was dead last in overall effective state and local tax rate, 47th in income tax rate, and near the bottom for property tax rate.
Illinois also pays the second highest gas taxes in the country. According to the study, the three least taxed states are Alaska, Delaware and Wyoming.
