Illinois Artist Laureate and Fayette County Native Kay Smith has passed away at 101 years of age, just days shy of her 102nd birthday.
Kay grew up on a farm in Fayette County and then lived in Chicago for 70 years and became a famous watercolorist and was named Illinois’ Artist Laureate. On the day of her 100th birthday in 2023, that day was proclaimed as Kay Smith Day in Chicago by the Mayor’s Office.
In July of 2023, Kay Smith donated a painting to the City of Vandalia. The painting is of the Vandalia Statehouse, with some other images added on the Statehouse lawn. A ceremony was held at that time to announce the gift.
