There was a long discussion at Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting on the possible sale of the former First Baptist Church building in downtown Vandalia.
Bob Culbertson was on hand to represent Unity Baptist Church. He says they are looking to sell the building to an individual, Rochelle Addison, who is planning to use the building for a women’s work release program.
Culbertson said they didn’t feel they had gotten clear answers on the matter and that is why Addison was planning to come to speak to the City Council on Monday, but was not able to make it. Culbertson said he did believe there were potential benefits for the City of Vandalia.
Alderman Steve Barker said he didn’t think this was a good fit for downtown Vandalia.
City of Vandalia Attorney Ryan Connor said really what he is concerned about is the building zoned to do what Addison wants to accomplish.
And, Connor he still need answers to know if the building can be used for this type of program.
Culbertson added that Addison currently had a similar program in Johnston City and has all of her Illinois licenses. He also said the individuals in this program already would have jobs and would just use the building for living purposes. He also added that Addison works to cherry pick the top inmates for such a program and that any violation and they would go back to prison.
The matter may be discussed further at the December 16th City Council meeting, as Addison may be able to attend.
