St. Elmo-Brownstown used a third quarter defensive effort and a big scoring second half to beat Maryville Christian, 48-31, on Wednesday night at the Mulberry Grove Thanksgiving Tournament. The Eagles were held to just three baskets in the first quarter, trailing 12-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles would make some adjustments in the second quarter and going to their perimeter game, would use a pair of threes from Gavin Sanders and Vadim Plum to turn the tide and outscore the Lions 12-7 to pull within a point, 19-81, at halftime. SEB played lockdown defense in the third quarter, allowing Maryville Christian just one basket in the period while Jayden Hughett hit for five points and fueled a 13-2 run to give SEB a 31-21 lead to start the fourth quarter. While the Lions would go for 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Eagles would go 9 of 10 from the free throw line to help put the game away for the 17-point win. Two Eagles finished in double digits as Lowell Wilhour’s steady scoring throughout the game gave him 16 points and Hughett finished with 12 points. SEB is 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in pool play at the tournament. They will face host Mulberry Grove on Friday night at 8:15pm where a win would punch their ticket to the Championship game on Saturday. A Mulberry Grove win would put SEB, the Aces and Maryville Christian in a three-way tie atop the pool with the tiebreakers coming into play to determine place game assignments.
