Brownstown-St. Elmo girls basketball had an up and down day on Saturday at the Pana Girls Thanksgiving Tournament, getting a last second win over Gillespie in their first game of the day before suffering their first loss of the season to Breese Mater Dei in their second game of the day. In their 11:30am matchup against Gillespie, BSE got out to a quick start as they were able to jump out to a 9-2 first quarter lead. The Miners would come back in the second quarter and outscore the Bombers 10-5, but BSE continued to hold a small lead, 14-12, at halftime. The scoring would stay close in the third quarter as the Bombers edged their lead out to four points, 22-18 heading into the fourth. An 11-3 run by Gillespie would have BSE trailing 29-25 midway through the fourth quarter before the Bombers pulled within two on a drive and score by Dayana Haslett with just inside three and a half minutes to go to make it 29-27. A bucket from Madi Milelr tied the game u at 29-29 with about 2:10 remaining but the Miners answered on the next possession with a baseline jumper to regain the lead over the Bombers 31-29. With neither team able to take advantage of the next several possessions, BSE would get the ball with just over 18 seconds remaining and with about 7 seconds left in the game, Addie Sasse hit a three pointer from the top of the key to give BSE the 32-31 lead. Gillespie immediately called a timeout after the basket and with BSE pressing, the Miners were unable to get a good shot off as the Bombers grabbed the comeback win 32-31 to improve to 4-0 on the season heading into their second matchup of the day.
In their final pool play game, the Lady Bombers would come up against Breese Mater Dei. The inside height and length of the Knights would create an issue for the Bombers from the tip as BSE was outscored 17-5 in the first quarter. BSE would get aggressive in the second quarter as they increased their drives to the basket and drew several fouls to get themselves to the free throw line. However, they would again be outscored 17-12 in the quarter and trail 34-17 at halftime. The Bombers would slow the Mater Dei scoring just a bit in the second half but BSE was outscored 25-10 as they would suffer the 59-27 loss, their first of the season. BSE now stands at 4-1 on the season and will have several days off before they return to action back at the Pana Tournament when they take on Camp Point Central at 4:00pm on Friday, November 29.
