The Vandalia City Council granted a tax override to a developer. And, this could lead to two new businesses in the community.
Last month, Mike Wehrle came before the Vandalia City Council. He told the council he had a potential prospect looking at his property on Veteran’s Avenue between O’Reilly Auto Parts and Los Amigos Restaurant. And, Wehrle informed the City Council it was a food establishment looking to build a two tenant building with one half filled at first and the possibility of a second food establishment in the future. But, Wehrle said to complete the transaction with the client, he was requesting from the City of Vandalia a 1% sales tax override to be paid to Wehrle annually on the gross sales of the initial tenant for 23 years. And, he would also request the same arrangement for the potential second tenant.
At their meeting on Monday, the City Council debated the issue further with some initial confusion on the request. After some further discussion, Alderman Bret Brosman proposed giving 1/2% of the sales tax override instead. That motion failed 4 to 3. The motion was then made to pay the full 1% and that measure passed by a 6 to 1 vote with only Brosman voting no.
Meanwhile, after the vote, Wehrle informed the City Council the first tenant that is looking to locate on his property is Domino’s Pizza. He said he was not able to divulge the potential second restaurant at this time.
