South Central picked up a 8-2 win over Brownstown-St. Elmo in the National Trail Conference opener for both teams on Friday. South Central got themselves out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Colton Smith that scored Brody Markley. BSE would answer in the bottom of the second and take their first and only lead of the game when a Cougar error allowed Dodge Willms to score from first and BSE pushed it to a 2-0 lead on the next play when Calvin Voelker singled to right field to score Benji Lowe. The BSE lead was short as South Central responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third inning. Callaway Smith singled to left field to score Evan Hoover and Garret Shumate scored on a fielder’s choice as the Cougars retook the lead, 3-2. South Central added on a trip of runs in the fifth inning on and RBI single from Colton Smith and a two RBI double from Hudson Moore to push the South Central lead to 6-2. A pair of runs on a Colton Smith double in the top of the sixth inning would wrap up the scoring as South Central would go on to the 8-2 win. South Central is now 4-1 overall on the season, 1-0 in the NTC, and will be off until Thursday when they travel to Wayne City. BSE moves to 2-3 on the season, 0-1 in the NTC, and will have another conference game coming up on Tuesday when they host CHBC in NTC and Egyptian Illini Conference action.
