Jeff Koontz, 58, of Smithboro, Illinois, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024, in HSHS Holy Family Hospital, Greenville, Illinois, surrounded by a loving family.
Jeff was born April 16,1966, in Greenville, Illinois, the son of Thomas Alva and Judy (Shultz) Koontz. He married Tina M. Barber, in Mulberry Grove, Illinois, on March 16, 1985, and they were blessed with over 39 years of marriage. He had been with his wife Tina, from the time they were 15 years old, until his death.
He grew up in Smithboro and spent all but 4 years of his life living in the community. After graduating from Mulberry Grove High School in 1984, he proudly served his country by joining the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged.
Sports were a very big part of Jeff’s life. He was a very talented athlete growing up, was an avid golfer at the Greenville Country Club in his adult years, past member of the school board at Mulberry Grove CUSD #1 for 10 plus years, as well as a dedicated listener of the KSHE radio station.
He was a loyal, loving, and caring person who loved spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren do anything.
Preceding him in death are his father, Tom and his brothers, Ronald and Donald Koontz.
Surviving Jeff are his mother, Judy Koontz of Smithboro, Illinois; his wife, Tina M. Koontz of Smithboro, Illinois; his sons, Robert (Lacey) Koontz of Mulberry Grove, Illinois and Tyler (Trinidad Gomez) Koontz of Urbana, Illinois; grandchildren, 11-year-old Mia Koontz and 7-year-old Benjamin Koontz; brother, Keith Koontz of Smithboro, Illinois; sister in law, Sherry (Matt) Pugh of Fillmore, Illinois; brothers in law, Scott (Shonda) Barber of Greenville, Illinois and Bill (Lori) Barber of Lebanon, Missouri; and many extended family and friends.
Visitation: 4:00 – 7:00 pm., Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at the First Christian Church, 1100 Killarney Drive, Greenville, IL 62246.
Graveside Service: 2pm., Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the Mulberry Grove Cemetery, Mulberry Grove, Illinois, with speaker, David Willis officiating.
The Mulberry Grove American Legion Post #1180 will be providing military honors.
Memorial contributions, for Mia & Ben’s College Education Fund, may be given at the visitation or mailed to the Assalley Funeral Home.
The family asks that donations be made to the Mia & Ben College Education Fund, in lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts. Checks may be made payable to: Robert Koontz.
The family has entrusted Assalley-Young Funeral Home in Greenville with the ceremonies.
